The story so far: Ace Rocket botches his first field mission for Excalibur Intelligence Agency and finds himself stranded and joining up with ethereal stranger Vana. She implores him to defect from the EIA against their abuses in her home quadrant, and join the secret hero C.A.R.D.S. instead. After a witnessing a hostage situation in Caratopolis, Vana grows insecure and abruptly parts ways with Ace.
Meanwhile, Ruff Shuffle and Rae Misere end up at Caratopolis Casino for their own investigations. Rae goes to meet Avarus Mammony alone at his private lounge. When she denounces his plans, he poisons her and leaves her for dead…
