Agent of C.A.R.D.S. Chapter 007 Hold Your Cards Close

The story so far: Ace Rocket’s search for the Jack of Hearts, the Excalibur Intelligence Agency’s number one target, takes him to the ethereal Vana in Cora Zone. Vana tells him that the EIA is running sinister mind control operations in Cora Zone, and tries to convince him that he is destined for the hero C.A.R.D.S. instead. Ace is skeptical, and anyway he has more immediate concerns on his mind: earlier, when he flew after the kidnapped Mouse the Joker, he ran into an anti-tech barrier which disabled his flight power and his vital system backup — which means he needs to get out of the anti-tech range as soon as possible that evening…

Central Cora Zone. You still want to hurry, don't you? I understand. Slow and quiet like this, we're less likely to be found and... turned.

Oh, what am I talking about? Zombies, curses — there's no such thing. What else could it be but dark magic — from the E.I.A. itself? I don't think so. But maybe Mouse will have answers. And the sooner we get out of here, the sooner we can help him and then meet the other two. Aren't you worried? Oh, I know Mouse! Always getting in and out of scrapes. He's a good guy and very clever — I'm confident he'll work something out as usual.

But even here, I can try to summon him. Whatever helps you believe, right?

Vana is dragged off into the darkness again. Ace follows after her, ducking behind a rock as the unseen foe shoots at him again.

Ace continues until he hears a splash. He turns on the flashlight, removes the night vision goggles, and sees the pool of glowing acid in front of him.
